Excuse Me While I Go And Scream …

This morning has NOT been any fun at all. I woke with energy and plans to really kick butt in the cleaning dept. I always use my Fridays as one big cleaning day so that I can enjoy the weekend without doing much of anything. But nothing went the way I had planned. The washer leaked water all over the laundry area’s floor, I spilled an entire container of oxyclean powder, one of the kids stole the phone behind my back and started making CALLS, and the A/C has been acting funny. I think it’s frozen over, and while not a HUGE deal .. I don’t need anymore of that today.

I’m now waiting for the boy to fall asleep. He’s being stubborn, but I can be just as stubborn. Thank goodness for that crib tent. I can put him down for nap time and make him stay put until he finally gives up. It’s the best invention ever!! Once he gives up then I’ll talk the other one into a nap as well .. and you can bet I’ll be taking advantage of that time to myself. I’m thinking of scrapping my to-do list and sleeping the rest of the afternoon away. Surely everything will be much rosier once I wake up, right?

TGIF!

I only wish it were Friday NIGHT instead of super early on Friday morning. I’m staying up to get my “ME” time in and I’ve found a really good quality link to “The Nanny Diaries” on Movie Forumz, but I don’t have the time to watch it. I would be up until at least 2 and that is just not an option when I have two little people who expect me to be up before 8am. The last time I stayed up too late, I also slept late and the older one broke the younger one of his crib tent and they were out of bed looking for things to get into by the time I got myself up. No way am I risking that again! :(

How much?!

Our electric bills have been going UP and UP and UP. It teetered on the $70 mark for a long time, no matter what the season but the most recent bill was around $150!! For a 1300 sq ft apartment. Ouch! I don’t know how this is even possible when we use the same amount (or so it seems). I’ll admit that I crank the air up pretty high during the night hours because I like to be snuggled in about a dozen blankets at night, but I have always done that and it never seemed to make a difference. I’m wishing more and more that we had picked a third floor unit as they have ceiling fans (along with really high ceilings!!). I think the use of fans would maybe cut down on the air conditioning use and possibly save some money in the long run. We had gorgeous hunter ceiling fans in our last place and they really helped keep us cool even though we didn’t have AC in that apartment. You rarely need it where we lived in southern San Diego.

I suppose ceiling fans will be one of the amenities I search for when we’re shopping for the next place! Now if only we could choose a location with a much cooler climate as well. Virginia is killing me this summer!

Night Night

My three year old just NOW went to bed. How horrible is that? I feel like a bad Mommy to even admit that. I don’t know what her deal is, or where she got the idea that she’s in charge, but we’ll have to be changing that really quick. I have always been really strict with the bedtimes and 11pm is far too late for a 3 year old and not at all healthy either. She’s been a total brat about it – screaming, telling us that bedtime is “only for babies!!”. Yes, we’re in that stage already. Bedtimes are for babies, and potties? Those are only for Mommies, not kids. Yes, we’ll be working on that as well. But one thing at a time.

Do-It-Yourself

When we moved into this apartment we were told that painting was fine as long as we changed it back to the primer white junk that we started with before we moved out. So of course that is the first thing I wanted to do! We hadn’t even unpacked the boxes yet. I was instead out at the local home improvement store picking out paint colors! First it was our master bathroom, then our living area, entry, hallway and then the master bedroom. I have a dark RED bedroom that I love, love, LOVE. That is one thing I will miss so much if we end up having to move from here.

As much as I adore everything now, I can’t say that painting went all that smoothly. We were totally clueless as to what tools we needed and what finishes of paint would be good. We sort of filled our cart up and just guessed our way through the process. To this day there’s a few spots on the ceiling where the roller slipped, and there are patches that aren’t as even as I would like them. But what can you do? We’re impulsive and we’re both the sort of people that don’t follow directions all that well. Had our internet been installed at the time, I would have looked online for reference or I could have bought a DVD. There are so many articles and videos posted right on the web to help you along the way. DoItYourself.com has a variety of helpful tips, tricks, and videos to watch if you’re looking to do a project on your own. They even have interior painting advice plus a video!!

I think I’ll go ahead and read/watch just so I’m informed. We’ll have to paint all of these walls back to white before we move – I might as well do it right the second time around, right? Visit DoItYourself.com for more and buy the DVD before starting your next project, you’ll be glad you did!

Whatever

I get really annoyed and a little offended when people diss the city that I live in. I’m not even from here, so there’s no “hometown pride” or anything like that. But it still gets me. Much of the time it’s referred to as “ghetto”, which is just ridiculous. People from other areas seem to act as if you should be dodging bullets if you visit. Can we say ignorant?

It’s old, established, and full of history. It has that charm that you can’t get from these cookie cutter neighborhoods you see springing up everywhere you turn. Sure, there’s crime! There’s even poor areas where the home aren’t million dollar mansions and folks struggle to get by. But that’s what you get in any urban environment – especially in this country.

The definition of ghetto:

1. a section of a city, esp. a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships.

2. (formerly, in most European countries) a section of a city in which all Jews were required to live.

3. a section predominantly inhabited by Jews.

4. any mode of living, working, etc., that results from stereotyping or biased treatment: job ghettos for women; ghettos for the elderly.

No, definitely not “ghetto” and if it is? I’m paying way too much to live here.

The Travel Bug

I’m always wanting to go some place, but I have this insane fear of flying and especially of flying over open bodies of water. Why? I’m not quite sure. In the event of a crash I doubt I would care whether or not my body is floating or not. LOL

I sometimes wish I had a job like my hubby with the benefits of visiting countries all over the world via a ship. Sure, being away from home for 6-7 months at a time isn’t ideal, but it would have it’s good points. In our first year of marriage he managed to go to so many places!! One of those being different areas of Australia, multiple times. I was left at home feeding him information about his locations via email. You know, where to stay, what to do, what to see. All the while I was green with envy! I couldn’t help myself, who wouldn’t be?

Maybe one of these days we will be able to travel together once the kids are older and I’ve found a suitable tranquilizer to calm me down during the flights. I would love to be researching Hotels in Sydney, Hotels in Melbourne and Hotels in Brisbane – but for ME this time and not just to pass the information along to someone else. :)

Up Late Again!

I’m not feeling too hot tonight – tummy troubles – so I’m up and surfing the internet while watching one of those survival shows. You know how it goes .. the guy purposely puts himself into the middle of nowhere and then tries to survive it. He’s in a jungle somewhere right now and it doesn’t look like any place I would want to be. Too many bugs and too much humidity. It may be tropical, but it’s not the Bahamas, that’s for sure! I couldn’t rough it like that. Give me those pink sand beaches and a fruity drink to lay on that beach with a fluffy hotel room to return to when I’m finished. ;)

Sentences!!

We’ve had a little explosion in words that Will can say now, just a little over a week shy of his 2nd birthday. While I’ve never made a list (because.. seriously, do people DO that?), I know he’s had WAY more words than Aubree ever did at this age and he can almost always repeat what we say back to us if we ask. Now he has stunned me with actual sentences. I’m just so proud of that kid!

I asked him last night if he wanted to go to bed and replied with:

“No night night, don’t like it!”

And then earlier this afternoon he was giving our African Grey parrot a cracker and he actually got it into her mouth without dropping it! He was so excited and he came to me and said:

“I did it, I did it!”

There are more, but I’ll spare you and save those for a baby book. LOL

Ahh.. where did my little baby go?! It’s so sweet to be able to communicate with him like an actual human being instead of feeling as if I am playing Pictionary with a baby gorilla.. but still. I don’t know if I’m ready for him to be 2 yet. :(

Real Men Of Genius

I should be working on putting our living room back together as Hurricane Toddler was fierce this morning, but of course since I have housework ADD I am instead doing something else. Like watching ‘Real Men Of Genius’ videos on YouTube. We always get really quiet when these come on when we’re in the car. I didn’t realize there were so many of them in video format!

Unfortunately, I’m married to this guy … *sighs*
